OCSW Launches Innovative Supported Internships Programme for Young People with SEND

On Course South West, Plymouth City Council’s adult learning provider is proud to announce the launch of its Supported Internships programme, a ground-breaking initiative designed to empower young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) aged 16 to 24 who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

The Your Future Supported Internships programme, set to commence on 22nd April 2025, offers a structured, work-based study curriculum that combines hands-on work experience with tailored academic support. Participants will benefit from:

  • 6 to 12-month work placements with local employers in:

    • Business and Admin 

    • Customer Service 

    • Health and Social Care 

    • Digital, Creative and Design 

    • Green Skills 

    • Education and Early Years

  • Personalised study programmes including English, Maths and other relevant subjects

  • Dedicated job coach support throughout the internship

  • Comprehensive skills training to enhance employability

"Our Supported Internships programme is a significant step towards creating inclusive employment opportunities for young people with SEND," said Councillor Sally Cresswell, Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Apprenticeships. "We're committed to equipping all our interns with the practical skills and confidence they need to secure paid employment in the future."

To introduce prospective interns to the programme, On Course South West will host a taster day on Friday, 11th April 2025, from 10am to 4pm at Hyde Park House, followed by activities around the city. This event will offer participants a glimpse into the experiences they can expect during the employability programme.
