On Course South West celebrate with their 2024 Learner awards

Last week the On Course South West (OCSW) Learner Awards ceremony was held at Chapel Bridge School in Plymouth to celebrate the efforts and achievements of their adult learners. Examples of the awards included: Learner of the year, Special recognition and Outstanding achievement.

Councillor Sally Cresswell, the Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Apprenticeships joined the OCSW team to introduce the event and congratulate all the winners.

Mark Trewin, Principal said: “It was a genuine delight to be at the Student Awards Ceremony, celebrating the outstanding achievements of On Course South West’s students. This event is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and the incredible power of education. It’s also a celebration of how On Course South West plays a pivotal role in transforming lives and boosting social mobility in our wonderful community. To the award recipients, their success is not just about earning qualifications; it’s about overcoming challenges, unlocking potential, and paving the way for a brighter future for themselves and their families. Our learners embody the spirit of perseverance and determination, and for that, we are all incredibly proud”.

As part of Plymouth City Council, OCSW has been a cornerstone of education in Plymouth, supporting over 4,300 learners this year and delivering programs in more than 70 community venues. This approach ensures that education is accessible to everyone, regardless of background or circumstance. It’s about bringing learning opportunities to the doorstep, making it easier for learners to pursue their dreams.

OCSW is proud that 30% of learners come from ethnic minorities and 21% have learning difficulties or disabilities. This inclusivity is vital for social mobility, ensuring everyone has the chance to succeed and thrive. OCSW understand the challenges posed by the cost of living crisis, and that’s why they offer affordable and free learning opportunities. Over 140 free courses for adults in Plymouth are offered to equip people with the skills needed for higher-paying jobs, helping to achieve economic stability and improve quality of life. Their innovative programmes, such as Skills Bootcamps and the "Your Future", prepare students for life and employment. The impact of the work is significant.
